Niki Taylor from The Writer (August, 2002) http://www.writermag.com/)  says, "Although my college writing courses were helpful, they didn't teach much about freelancing--and certainly not about using the Internet to find writing markets. Jump Start Your Writing Career with Electronic Publishers by S. Joan Popek is the first book I've read that does both."

S. Joan Popek’s JUMPSTART YOUR CAREER WITH ELECTRONIC PUBLISHERS is an extraordinarily complete guide for writers, specifically those interested in writing for electronic publication, but also to writers trying to break into print as well.

Unlike many “how to” or instructional writing or market books, JUMPSTART provides tangible tips on how to submit your work, the importance of following guidelines, etc., and quotes several publishers who state briefly what they expect.  This is no hastily thrown-together guide.  As with all her projects, fiction and nonfiction, Popek is a consummate professional who painstakingly researches her subject matter and presents it in an accessible manner.  Although JUMPSTART is useful to
writers generally, as the title promises, Popek focuses on the electronic publishing industry more often than not in this book.

Because it is difficult to break into traditional print book publishing, e-books, Popek explains, offer a less expensive alternative, and welcome newcomers as well as established authors such as Stephen King and Patricia L. White.  It’s, “the
newest way to promote your work and get noticed”—and while the merit of electronic publishing and whether it should be taken as seriously as print publishing can (and undoubtedly will) continue to be debated in various circles, Popek (who has
done quite well for herself as a writer in both electronic and print formats and knows what she's talking about) leaves the debate to others and instead offers everything from general advice to specific information every writer can use.

The Nuts and Bolts section, in particular, explains and covers copyright info, the difference between print and electronic rights, and Popek also provides a course on how to write, including sample writings and even a section on grammar.  While much
of what is covered in JUMPSTART is of value to all writers, it is primarily geared toward (and will ultimately be of greater value to) the newer or beginning writer, but if you are interested in learning about e-books and the electronic publishing
industry specifically, and how it can impact your writing career, then Ms. Popek’s JUMPSTART YOUR CAREER WITH ELECTRONIC PUBLISHERS is a must-have reference guide for beginning and seasoned authors alike.  Highly recommended.

 5Recommendation from Scribes World Reviews

Along with an abundance of truly helpful information regarding ePublishing,  Popek adds some of her delightful flash fiction stories and short stories to the mix.  Writer Popek can be counted on to provide easily understood, valuable, highly needed
information on the at times mysterious subject of ePublishing.  Puzzlement of the oft difficult to comprehend electronic rights and copyrights are both presented in straight forward, easily digested manner for both the newbie and more experienced
writer.  If you are now or have thought you might be in the market for an agent, Popek's chapter on the subject will aid both the novice and more accomplished to writing as she explains why agents do or do not work as hoped for for the writer.
Popek's addition of a number of online sites as click on links help the reader explore the world of ePublishing in a painless manner.

Danielle Naibert says, "This isn't just a "how to" book about electronic publishing. This is a book for the writer inside all of us who is willing to take that extra step forward into the world of publishing, and with an added bonus, Popek explains the world of online publishing. I would suggest this book for print or online writers." Read the complete review at The Book Reviewers Site

Jump Start Your Writing Career with Electronic Publishers
S. Joan Popek
reviewed by Barry Hunter.

For those of you who are thinking about a writing career and want to use the internet or electronic publishing to help you out, be sure to pick up this indispensable book to help give yourself the start and possibly, just the jump start you need.

Popek gives you all the details on electronic publishing, the nuts and bolts of writing, rights and copyrights, publishers, agents, and self-promotion. She also gives examples of ideas and adds an example to show how things are done.

She also gives a list of publishers, review sites and other web sites to help the aspiring writer to get from that first step all the way up to the final step of getting that book published.

This is a well-written book that comes across in a very sensible, friendly tone that is not preachy or hard to understand. This book deserves to be in every aspiring writers library and is on the Baryon recommended list.

Molly Martin says, "Jump Start provides a wealth of data relating to self promotion, writer’s block, word count, where story ideas come from and cyberspace the new frontier to mention a few of the chapter subjects.  Writer Popek asks the all important question, ‘do you really want to be published’ in chapter 1 before she goes on to walk you through the procedure from idea to finished product.  This successful, well respected writer knows whereof she speaks."
