Dedicated to my Grandson
Scott Jeffries,
when he was an
Airman in the United States Air Force
I saw an eagle, and he was you.
His mighty wings outstretched.
Toward the rising sun,
he climbed straight and true.
Brave, Strong and Free,
he soared with graceful ease,
a mighty symbol of our legacy.
He glanced down at me…
And gently dipped
one giant wing to salute
this humble, land bound soul.
He circled above my head.
Once, twice, three times.
This elegant creature of myth.
Pausing in his journey,
to liberate my fears.
Majestic symbol of courage.
Just as you and your comrades
personify the valor of America
with pride and gallantry.
Dipping a mighty wing once more,
he bid farewell to me.
I felt a sense of wonder.
I knew…
he would return you safe to me.
May you soar on the wings
of your dreams.
May your days be free
with the Eagle’s
splendorous dignity.
I saw an Eagle, and it is true.
I saw an Eagle, and he was you.
